Markets

The ‘makete’ or ‘market’ runs from 6am on Tuesdays and Fridays in the village of Alofi, and offers fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, live uga (coconut crabs) and fresh fish, along with food that has been traditionally prepared and cooked in a ground oven or ‘umu’. Handicrafts are also for sale, and you need to be there early to find the best bargains. There is also now a Friday Night Food Market held on a fortnightly basis. You’ll need to check with your accommodation to see if this is on during your stay in Niue.
